HHS finalizes new compliance deadlines for ICD-10 transition

On Monday, August 27, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the release of a rule that makes final a one-year proposed delay—from October 1, 2013, to October 1, 2014—in the compliance date for the industry's transition to ICD-10 codes. Secretary Sebelius first announced the proposed delay in April and the release of the final rule solidifies the delay.  Many health care advocates and industry experts had expressed concern that the previous deadline would lead to significant confusion within the Medicare system and possible disruptions of payments due to expected non-compliance.  The October, 2014 extension is expected to be the last extension offered by HHS.
